Werner Liebmann: Works on Paper
March 5 - 29, 2013
With his latest series of works in gouache, artist
Werner Liebmann continues his exploration of "What is painting, what is a
picture?" He finds that the term "painting" is readily used to define
works from unrelated disciplines such as photographs, sculp-tures and
even installations, especially when the colours used are remiscent of
painting. For Liebmann, a painting represents an opinion of reality
that excludes movement. It is to be understood as a substrate of the
essential: it is a philosophical generalization con-taining time as a
formula, thus it captures the beginning and end simultaneously.

Werner Liebmann (1951) is a Berlin-based artist and professor of painting at the Art Academy Berlin-Weissensee. After graduating with a degree in chemistry from Martin Luther University in Halle in 1973, he worked in the industry for several years. In 1976 he gave up his profession to pursue his passion for the arts. After studying painting and graphics at leading art schools in Germany, he taught art in Dresden in from 1986 to 1992. In 1993, he moved to the Art Academy in Berlin, where he has remained ever since. He has exhibited extensively, in both group and solo shows, in his native Germany and abroad in major centres stretching from London to Seoul to Vancouver.
