Environmental Music

Environmental Music II

Following the highly successful Environmental Music exhibition in 2010, this exhibition presents recent works by Carol Westcott, Dan Ryan and Laura Culic (pictured below). The natural world and landscape painting continue to be drivers for their art work and practice. Subtle changes have occurred in their works over the past three years. This is not unexpected and is true of most artists. However, the natural world has remained their inspiration, and each of them has brought something new and engaging to it.

The exhibition is on view from September 24 to October 18, 2013. The gallery is open Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Photo-OP 2013
5th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition

September 5 - 20, 2013
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 5, 6-8 pm
Gallery Hours: Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm.

For this annual juried photography exhibition artists from across Ontario submit photographs that are reviewed by a jury or juror. This year’s juror was Dale Barrett, Director/Curator of the John B. Aird Gallery. Dale Barrett has overseen the exhibition programme at the Aird Gallery since 1998. He has worked in the art gallery sector, for both public and commercial art galleries, for over thirty years.

“As a juror, I set myself the task of viewing and considering the entries with an eye towards selecting works that surpass ordinary standards of photographic art practice. In my view, works that “surpass ordinary standards of photographic art practice” are exemplified by a high level of technical skill, critical reflection of subject matter and aesthetics, and an awareness of the history of the art form, whether it be photographic portraiture, landscape photography, abstraction, documentation, or numerous other such categories. Of course no single standard can be used to judge all categories of works. Given the different fields of interest and approaches taken by the artists entering this exhibition, one has to look for excellence on a number of fronts. Although the decision making process is not always straightforward or even it always results in an interesting perspective on excellence. And, as always, presents an outstanding collection of artworks by emerging and established photographers.”

The following artists’ works have been selected for the exhibition: Melissa Armstrong, John  Bingham, Peter Bogaczewicz, Jason Brown, Marco Buonocoro, Gokche Erkan, Julie Florio, Janny Fraser, Amy Friend, L. E. Glazer, Cathy Griggs, Frank Gross, Tineke Jorritsma, Sandy Middleton, Emily Miller, Audra Noble, Christine Peterson, Tom Ridout, Akas Tarmaji, Sarah Tothill, Ross Winter, Nicola Woods, Olga Zamora.

We are also pleased to announce that the following artists will be awarded prizes at the opening reception on Thursday, September 5.

Werner Liebmann: Works on Paper

Werner Liebmann: Works on Paper
March 5 - 29, 2013

With his latest series of works in gouache, artist Werner Liebmann continues his exploration of "What is painting, what is a picture?" He finds that the term "painting" is readily used to define works from unrelated disciplines such as photographs, sculp-tures and even installations, especially when the colours used are remiscent of painting. For Liebmann, a painting represents an opinion of reality that excludes movement. It is to be understood as a substrate of the essential: it is a philosophical generalization con-taining time as a formula, thus it captures the beginning and end simultaneously.

Werner Liebmann (1951) is a Berlin-based artist and professor of painting at the Art Academy Berlin-Weissensee. After graduating with a degree in chemistry from Martin Luther University in Halle in 1973, he worked in the industry for several years. In 1976 he gave up his profession to pursue his passion for the arts. After studying painting and graphics at leading art schools in Germany, he taught art in Dresden in from 1986 to 1992. In 1993, he moved to the Art Academy in Berlin, where he has remained ever since. He has exhibited extensively, in both group and solo shows, in his native Germany and abroad in major centres stretching from London to Seoul to Vancouver.

The Art of Line

The Art of Line (Subversivität der Linie) offers a unique opportunity to see how contemporary European artists are approaching the medium of drawing. The nine artists in the exhibition, all from Austria's easternmost state of Lower Austria, demonstrate the variety and dimension of drawing. Themes range from landscape and botanical studies to figure drawing and technology, while approaches encompass traditional mediums to new graphic techniques. The nine artists include the doyen of Lower Austria drawing, Karl Korab, with his impressive charcoal drawings of the beautiful Waldviertel region, where the landscape transitions from forests to vineyards. The other artists include Martina Golser, Christina Starzer, Moussa Kone, Leopold Kogler, Gunter Damisch, Gerhard Kaiser, Robert Kabas and Gerlinde Thuma.
