The jurors awarded First Prize to Olexander Wlasenko of Oshawa, Ont. for a 5’ x 12’ charcoal drawing entitled “The Waiting”. The second prize went to Midori Fullerton of Tottenham, Ont. for a large format graphite, watercolour and india ink drawing entitled “Moth”. The jurors awarded two third prizes. One to Hanna Hur of Toronto, Ont. for a pair of colour pencil drawings entitled, “Home Run Who Cares” and “Slam Dunk So What”. The other to Scott Waters of Toronto, Ont. for an oil, pencil, and gesso drawing entitled “The Glory Days”. Honorable mentions were also awarded. Amanda Burke of North Bay, Ont. received the Japanese Paper Place award for a pair of charcoal on paper drawings, “Dual (Cecrops)” and “Dual (Dooley and Healey)”. Saba Moghtader of Toronto, Ont. received the Curry’s Art Store award for her video “Friedrich–Google”.

Drawing 2011
DRAWING 2011 presents 36 original works by emerging and established artists that demonstrate the skill and creativity of the discipline at its best. This year, 115 artists from across Canada submitted more than 200 works in a variety of styles, media and techniques for consideration. From these, two jurors (Sadko Hadzihasanovic and Dale Barrett) selected the 36 works in the exhibition and awarded the following prizes.

ERNESTINE TAHEDL: PASSAGES






Ernestine Tahedl: PASSAGES, Works Inspired by my Travels is on view from January 11 to February 4, 2011. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 13, 6-8 pm.
Ernestine Tahedl is an internationally known artist and longtime resident of King City, Ontario. This latest large-size series of acrylic paintings by the artist is co-presented with TRIAS GALLERY, Toronto. The artist states, “I explore and try to find the balance between the realistic image and pictorial values in my paintings. The concept of multiple canvases and panels has always fascinated me. It leads me towards the medieval concept of religious paintings and their spirituality. Spirituality and serenity are integral to my work. Colour and light are additional factors that guide me. Colour to me is light.”

FRAGILE SPACES, December 2010


FRAGILE SPACES, an exhibition of artworks by the Bayside Artists collective, is on view from December 14, 2010 to January 7, 2011. An opening reception takes place on Thursday, December 16 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm with the artists in attendance.
The Bayside Artists: Mary Lynne Atkinson, Sheila Bristow, Patricia Guinn, Norma Jacobs, Margaret Ann Paradis, Carmen O. Prieto, Kate Ramos, Hala Saab, Joe Saab, and Eileen Sweeney work in and around the city of Barrie. The collective was inspired by and choose to produce works in response to a quote by John Updike, “What art offers is Space – a certain breathing room for the spirit.” The end result is a diverse collection of abstract and representational paintings in oil, acrylic and mixed media.
